When to Seek Emergency/Urgent Care for Pets

Determining whether your pet needs emergency or urgent care isn’t always easy. Keep in mind, though, that pets stoically mask symptoms and hide signs of discomfort until they’re no longer able to do so. This means that even if they are only exhibiting minor symptoms, there could be something much more serious going on beneath the surface. For this reason, we recommend seeking prompt veterinary care anytime you think something could be wrong. It’s always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your best friend’s health. 

There are also situations and symptoms which always warrant seeing a veterinarian as quickly as possible:
  • Refusal to eat or drink for 24+ hours
  • Repeated vomiting and/or diarrhea episodes
  • Unexplained behavior changes (aggression, hiding, etc.)
  • Straining to pass urine or stool
  • Crying out in pain
  • Injuries sustained in falls, animal attacks, or car accidents
  • Bleeding from any orifice
  • Blood in urine, feces, or vomit
  • Extreme lethargy
  • Collapse, seizures, or loss of consciousness
  • Complications during labor/delivery
  • Exposure to/ingestion of known toxins
